How Much Does Stump Grinding Cost in Lynchburg, VA?

By Zephaniah Brooks, Brooks Operations · Updated October 8, 2026

The honest answer is that it depends on the stump — but the things that change the price are predictable, and once you know them you can tell roughly where your job will land before anyone shows up.

Typical price ranges

National cost guides put most stump grinding jobs somewhere between about $130 and $440, with an average a little under $300 per job. Many companies have a minimum charge around $100, and additional stumps on the same visit usually cost much less than the first one, since the machine is already on site. (Figures from LawnStarter’s 2026 pricing guide.)

Those are national numbers, not our price list. Every job we do is quoted on site, in writing, before any work starts.

What actually moves the price

1. Diameter

Size is the biggest factor. Measure straight across the top of the stump at its widest point. A 10-inch stump from an ornamental tree is a quick job; a 36-inch oak is a different afternoon. Some outfits price strictly by the inch, often a few dollars per inch.

2. How many stumps

Getting the grinder there and set up is part of the cost, so grouping stumps into one visit is the easiest way to lower the price per stump.

3. The wood and the roots

Hardwoods like the oaks and maples common around Lynchburg take longer to grind than pine. A stump with big surface roots running across the yard takes extra time if you want those chased out too. Old, partly rotted stumps usually go faster.

4. Access

A stump in an open front yard is simple. One behind a fence with a narrow gate, on a steep bank, or tight against a foundation, driveway or retaining wall takes more care and more time.

5. What happens to the grindings

Raking the chips back into the hole is normally included. Hauling them away is extra work and usually an added charge.

How to get an accurate number fast

  • Count the stumps and measure each one across the top.
  • Take a photo of each stump and one showing how we’d get to it.
  • Note anything nearby — fences, beds, irrigation, a septic field.
  • Decide whether you want the grindings left or hauled.

You can add those photos when you book a free estimate. We’ll still look in person, but it helps us show up ready.

Watch out for

  • Prices that change on the day. Get the number in writing before work starts.
  • Shallow grinding. Ask how far below grade they go. We grind 4–6 inches below grade so grass or sod can go right over the spot.
  • Skipping 811. Utilities need to be marked first — see our guide on calling 811 in Virginia.
